Smart Old Wives' (Remedies) - writercize #159

Tonight my energy levels are dipping and my throat is on its way to Scratchville. It seems despite life in sunny Southern California, winter's cold season is beckoning. Since I would rather encourage it to pass me by, I'm turning to you, my wonderful readers, to share your knowledge about fighting colds the non-medicine way, in your own words.

writercize: Please tell me what Old Wives' Tale works to stave off sickness! If you know the science behind it, please share.

I will read your answers in the comments section with my own Old Wives' trick, a piping hot cup of tea with honey and lemon, in hand. And thank you!

PS - I signed up yesterday for the A to Z Blogging Challenge, an annual blogging event the month of April. If you participated before, I'd love to see you there again! If you haven't, check it out - it is a great international blogging event and I highly recommend it. For more info or to sign up, click on the badge to the right, open the #AtoZChallenge page above, or visit this article on Technorati news about blogging challenges: Benefits of Blogging Challenges.

  1. I got recently got this remedy from a friend who is into all-natural, organic, holistic food and medicine. It's only three simple ground/powdered spices and honey but one powerful remedy for colds.

    1/4 tsp ginger
    1/4 tsp cinnamon
    1/2 tsp turmeric

Mix the powders with a tsp-tbsp of honey into a paste, you can adjust the amount of honey to your liking, but try to take the spices as strong as you can handle.

  3. Tea with honey! The truly discriminating Bear's drink of choice. I'm a fan already! Even thought I don't have much interest in old wives tales.

  5. I support the above! I drink piping hot chamomile with honey, and a bowl of won ton soup also does wonders. My mom swears by gargling with alka-setzer, but I can't stand it, so I stick to the tea and soup! Feel better soon, and thanks for stopping by The Modest Peacock! See you again soon!

    1. Alka-seltzer - I'll have to give that one a try sometime too. I think my next step will be spiking the won ton soup with some hot peppers to open up my sinuses, then I'll be all set! Thanks for stopping in here too! :)

  6. I am enjoying reading the comments. I have a case of scratchy throat too. Ugh. Suppose I better get started on the hot tea.

I did the A to Z last year and loved it. Some of my post from that month have turned into my most popular post. I gained a ton of followers and met some really cool folks. Found you tonight via A to Z.
